BESA Thoughts: Colorism in the Music Industry Tory Lanez | Kash Doll

Happy Monday! Let’s get real for a moment.

Yesterday while looking up topics to talk about on air I came across a couple of things. The first one was a semi viral video of Tory Lanez appearing to defend a darker skinned model after Tory Lanez music video director switched her out for a lighter skinned model. In the video you see Tory Lanez saying what appears to be “she was already here,” but don’t quote me on that! Check out the video below:

Tory Lanez then took to his Instagram to post the following:

“This is an On -Going problem in our community of entertainment that needs to stop . As a black man , Sometimes I’m going to joke about the black community just like we all do . BUT WHAT IM NOT GOING TO DO IS ALLOW ANY OF THESE DIRECTORS TO DE-VALUE OUR BLACK WOMEN ... countless times I’ve seen directors swap out our women of color for women of lighter complexion, or women with straighter hair ETC . ... IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS ARTIST TO STAND UP AND NOT LET THIS HAPPEN .. it’s BEEN time to embrace our woman of color #BlackIsBeautiful” - Via Instagram/ToryLanez

Now of course I was happy to see him standing for the darker skinned model. HOWEVER the model has come out to say this is all lies!

I wasn’t there, so I can’t say if it was real or not. However I will point out the video watermark, and the person seemingly hiding around the corner to film. Do I want this to not be staged, yea, however at the end of the day the model is the one that needs the love if this happened. See the photos below:

As for Kash Doll, she took to Twitter yesterday to announce she was experiencing colorism in the music industry for the first time:

“It’s crazy i remember saying i haven’t witnessed Colorism just yet in the industry... well it happened! This guy don’t even wanna clear this beat Bc of my skin tone or unless i get another woman on the hook that’s a lighter complexion... just wanted to share that with u guys 🤦🏾‍♀️” -Via Twitter/Kashdoll

A lot of people have been supporting her, I mean at the end of the day it’s a hot mess for them to not clear a song over some melanin. At the end of the day, it sucks balls that you have to pass the paper bag test to not get discriminated but that’s the world we live in.

Personally I’ve been told “You’re pretty for a dark skinned girl” and it’s one of the most trash compliments and I wish people would stop saying it.

Anywhoots, just wanted to chat on a melaninated topic being that Juneteeth is this Wednesday. And although Juneteeth is only a couple days away, we STILL deal with colorism in 2019
