  • Five of these shootings have taken place in California, which has some of the strictest gun laws. Six have taken place in Florida.
  • America has to figure out this problem.
  • From 2019-2021 gun homicides increased 46%.

The start of 2023 has seen an alarming spike in gun violence, with 40 mass shootings so far this month.

The Gun Violence Archive, which tracks shootings across the country and defines a mass shooting as an incident where at least four victims are injured or killed, says 73 people have so far been killed this year. That's compared to 27 by the same date last year.

There were six mass shootings on January 1st alone, and only seven days this month which haven't seen a mass shooting. The largest shooting occurred on Sunday in in Monterey Park, California, where 12 people were killed and nine others were injured. Just two days later, eight people were killed in separate shootings in California's Bay Area.

The latest mass shooting occurred recorded by the Gun Violence Archive occurred yesterday in Red Springs, North Carolina where a man shot and killed three people. One other victim was shot and is in critical condition. The suspect, a 46-year-old convicted murderer who has been out on parole since 2020, is in custody.
