A Michigan woman was taken into custody after leading police on a wild chase, but it is what she did after the chase that is making headlines. As officers approached the car following the chase, 36-year-old Kristi Rettig lit up a crack pipe and started smoking.
Officers tried to pull Rettig over because she had a broken tail light, but she sped off as soon as they turned on their flashing lights. Officers deployed spike strips in an attempt to get her off the road, but she drove right through them and continued on, despite the damage to her tires. The cops tried to box her in with patrol cars, but she struck two of them before finally coming to a stop on the side of the road.
As officers approached her car with their guns drawn, Rettig decided to take one more hit before she was taken to jail.
"In this job, you can never say you've seen it all," Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told Fox2Detroit. "I think she truly believed she was going back to prison and figured she'd get one more hit of crack cocaine before she does her time."
Rettig was "charged with flee and elude, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and operating while license suspended," Macomb County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison.
Her passenger, 28-year-old Alexandra Weed, was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.
