Safari Guide Saves Newlyweds, Stops Charging Elephant With His Hand

A fearless safari guide stared down a charging bull elephant and saved the lives of a newlywed couple on the last day of their seven-day honeymoon at The Outpost Lodge in Kruger, South Africa. In the dramatic video, the giant elephant is running toward the three as they hide near a tree. The guide stood calmy and raised his hand in the air and shouted at the elephant. The elephant abruptly stopped in its tracks and stared down the guide. After about a minute the elephant turned around and left.

The newlyweds, Brett Larsen and Lulu Shi, stopped to admire the elephant, which was about 300 feet away when it suddenly started charging down a hill toward them. Larsen told Independent Online their lead guide, named Dean, "moved forward and become the target."

“Straight away Dean had moved forward and become the target. He put his arm up and yelled “Whoooa” and about 10m away the elephant stopped dead in its tracks."

The elephant made two more attempts to charge at them, but Dean held his ground, and the elephant eventually retreated. Larsen said he was impressed that Dean never had to raise his rifle during the "surreal" encounter.

“With his right arm raised Dean was loudly commanding the elephant and it backed off. It was surreal. And what impressed me is that Dean didn’t raise his rifle once. This bloke stepped up to the mark and without hesitation and no fear put his body on the line."
